This arresting Victorian show poster advertises Captain Costentenus — "G. A. Farini's Tattooed Greek" — at the Royal Aquarium, and it ranks among the most memorable pieces of nineteenth-century sideshow advertising ever printed. Where many surviving Costentenus bills show only his head and torso, this full-length chromolithograph presents the entire figure: a bearded man standing in a red loincloth and slippers against a soft green ground, his whole body — face, chest, arms, legs, and feet — rendered as a dense leopard-like mesh of tattoos. The engraver's halftone technique gives the skin an almost animal print, while the towering wood-type headline "TATTOOED GREEK" leaves no doubt about the spectacle on offer.

Costentenus, also known as Georgius Constantine, was among the most famous human curiosities of the Victorian and Gilded Age circuit. His publicity told of a Greek-Albanian nobleman seized during an ill-fated military venture in Chinese Tartary and Burma and condemned, in place of death, to be tattooed from head to foot — a torment said to have lasted about three months and to have covered him with some seven thousand figures of elephants, gazelles, monkeys, serpents, and birds drawn from the art of the East. Modern researchers generally regard this dramatic tale of captivity as invention, and believe Costentenus acquired his extensive Burmese-style tattooing willingly before reshaping it into an unforgettable stage biography. The legend, true or not, was superb marketing.

Under the management of the great showman Guillermo Antonio Farini — born William Leonard Hunt, and already famous as a daredevil funambulist — Costentenus appeared at London's Royal Aquarium in Westminster and toured the United States with P. T. Barnum's circus, becoming one of the best-paid performers in the business and reportedly commanding well over a thousand dollars a week. His completely illustrated body helped make tattooing fashionable among wealthy Victorians and left a lasting mark on the history of the art. Posters like this one, printed by New York lithographers for his exhibitions, are now prized documents of circus and tattoo history.

This is a high-quality reproduction of the original lithograph, carefully restored from a high-resolution archival scan and printed on premium archival matte paper with rich, true-to-life colour and sharp detail. The tall, banner-like format of the original is preserved, making it a dramatic vertical statement on a wall.

Bold and unmistakably vintage, this print is a natural fit for a living room, hallway, study, bar, or tattoo studio, and sits perfectly alongside other antique circus, sideshow, and curiosity prints. It also makes a wonderful, offbeat gift for tattoo lovers, collectors of Victorian oddities, circus and carnival historians, and anyone who appreciates the strange, ornate showmanship of the nineteenth-century "living wonders."

The Royal Aquarium, opened in Westminster in 1876, was a vast hall of concerts, curiosities, and variety acts rather than an actual aquarium, and it became one of London's premier stages for "living wonders" like Costentenus. Bills such as this one survive today largely through medical-history and library collections, where they are valued as vivid, slightly unsettling records of a vanished culture of nineteenth-century spectacle.
