One of the great curiosities of Belle Epoque Paris springs to life in this vivid lithograph, "L'Homme Tatoué" — The Tattooed Man — advertised at the Skating de la Rue Blanche. A muscular, fully tattooed figure strikes a heroic pose, a brilliant red cloak swept dramatically around him, while every visible inch of his skin, from his brow to his feet, is covered in a dense blue lacework of tattooed animals, flowers, and ornamental patterns. Bold Art Nouveau lettering wraps the image with the single French phrase that promised the whole spectacle: "L'HOMME TATOUE."

The poster belongs to one of the most colourful chapters of nineteenth-century Parisian nightlife. In the 1870s and 1880s a craze for roller skating — known simply as "le skating" — swept the fashionable districts of Paris, and rinks opened across the city as glamorous social venues. The Skating de la Rue Blanche, near the entertainment quarter of Montmartre and Pigalle, was one of these establishments, and like its rivals it drew crowds not only with skating but with variety turns, spectacles, and human "wonders." A tattooed man was a guaranteed draw. This poster would have been pasted around the neighbourhood to lure the curious inside.

The image is a direct descendant of the international vogue for tattooed performers that figures like the celebrated Captain Costentenus had ignited a few years earlier. Across Europe and America, fully tattooed men and women became star attractions of circuses, aquariums, and variety halls, their bodies transformed into living galleries of exotic imagery. The performer shown here — his identity now unrecorded, the affiche simply catalogued as "non identifie" — carries the same allure: an ordinary human form made astonishing, wrapped in a theatrical cape that heightens the sense of mystery and showmanship.

The lithograph was printed in Paris by the well-known house of Imprimerie Emile Levy, whose address at 13 Rue de la Jussienne appears in the lower margin. Levy was among the busy commercial printers who supplied the posters, sheet-music covers, and advertising that papered Belle Epoque Paris, and surviving examples of his theatrical and sideshow bills are now collected as documents of the era's popular culture. The original artist is unknown, which only adds to the poster's raw, anonymous energy.

This is a faithful, museum-quality reproduction, carefully restored from a high-resolution archival scan so that the strong reds, cool blues, and fine tattoo detail all read clearly. It is printed on premium archival matte paper with rich, true-to-life colour and crisp lines.

Bold, strange, and full of character, this print is a natural centrepiece for a living room, hallway, study, bar, or tattoo studio, and it pairs beautifully with other vintage circus, sideshow, and tattoo-history prints. It also makes a memorable, offbeat gift for tattoo enthusiasts, collectors of Belle Epoque and Parisian ephemera, circus and carnival historians, and anyone captivated by the ornate, theatrical world of nineteenth-century spectacle.

Beyond its beauty as an object, the poster is a small window onto a vanished Paris — a city briefly obsessed with roller rinks, red capes, and the thrill of the extraordinary, where an anonymous tattooed man could become, for a season, the talk of the Rue Blanche. It is a piece that rewards a close look and always invites a second glance.
