Some perfume posters describe a fragrance; Leopoldo Metlicovitz makes you believe you can smell it. His 1898 advertisement for Fleurs de Mousse, a French perfume, stands among his finest works, an ethereal fantasy that turns scent into pure enchantment.

At its centre reclines a languid sylph, a delicate nude figure lost in rapt contemplation of a small vial of fragrance. Metlicovitz lets his imagination run beautifully wild: the perfume is shown to be so potent that it summons butterflies, drawing them into the enchanted scene as if the air itself had come alive. It is sensual, dreamlike and utterly persuasive, and it captures exactly why the artist was so prized, his ability to transform an ordinary commercial product into an object of desire through mythological and naturalistic imagery. Look closely and the whole composition seems to shimmer, the boundary between advertisement and reverie dissolving until only the poetry remains.

Leopoldo Metlicovitz (1868-1944) was a pioneer of Italian Liberty, the Italian expression of Art Nouveau, and a celebrated designer of operatic and advertising posters for the great house of Ricordi in Milan. His work fused technical brilliance with a romantic imagination, and Fleurs de Mousse shows both gifts at their height.

Art Nouveau swept across Europe at the turn of the twentieth century, casting aside rigid academic convention in favour of sinuous whiplash lines, botanical ornament and idealised figures. It was the movement that first lifted the humble advertising poster into a genuine art form and turned the city street into an open-air gallery. This print carries that lush, otherworldly beauty intact.

On a wall it is quietly captivating. Displayed at scale, a vintage lithographic poster becomes a genuine focal point, its soft palette and graceful figure drawing the eye above a bed, sofa or vanity. It brings romance to a gallery wall, suits a bedroom, dressing room or boudoir-inspired corner perfectly, and adds warmth, colour and a sense of history to a living room, hallway, dining room or studio.

Each print is made to order on premium 189 gsm museum-grade archival matte paper with fade-resistant pigment inks, for rich, gallery-quality colour and crisp, enduring detail. Choose your size from the drop-down menu, in 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30 or 24x36 inches. Every order is carefully packaged and shipped rolled in a sturdy tube, or flat for the smallest size, and arrives ready to frame. Frame not included.

This is a faithful fine-art reproduction of the original lithograph, colour-matched and printed to archival standards rather than a flat mass-market copy. It preserves the texture and character of the antique poster while arriving clean and crisp, and subtle age-toning is part of its authentic historic character.

For anyone who loves Italian Liberty, Art Nouveau and Belle Epoque design, it makes an enchanting gift and a lasting way to bring a piece of decorative art history into a home, studio or workplace.
