Cycles Perfecta, created by Alphonse Mucha in 1902, is one of the most exhilarating of all Art Nouveau advertisements, a poster in which the master of decorative line found the perfect excuse to set his famous cascading hair in motion. It remains among his most beloved and instantly recognisable commercial designs.
Mucha understood that great advertising sells desire rather than the object itself. Here he barely shows the bicycle at all, revealing just enough to obscure the brand, and pours all his attention into the pleasure of riding. A graceful figure leans across the machine with effortless elegance, her windblown hair capturing pure motion and restless energy. Her gaze is direct and challenging, an invitation rather than a coy glance, daring the viewer to join her. While her face stays serene, her tresses have already anticipated the rush of speed, billowing into the dramatic configurations of Mucha's signature 'macaroni' curls. The bicycle finally gave him the perfect justification for hair in full dynamic flight, and he seized it completely.
Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939), the Czech master of Art Nouveau, defined the look of the Belle Epoque poster with his ornamental borders, flowing hair and radiant female figures. His manner was so influential that it became known simply as 'le style Mucha', and his images remain among the most reproduced in the history of decorative art. The Perfecta was an English-manufactured bicycle, distributed in France as well, making this one of his rare commissions for an English client.
Art Nouveau swept across Europe at the turn of the twentieth century, sweeping away rigid academic convention in favour of sinuous 'whiplash' lines, botanical ornament and idealised figures. It was the movement that first turned the humble advertising poster into a genuine art form and made the city street an open-air gallery.
Displayed at scale, this poster is a genuine focal point. Its elegant composition and warm palette hold their own above a sofa, bed or console, anchor a gallery wall of mixed prints, and bring grace, colour and a sense of history to a living room, hallway, bedroom, studio or home bar.
Each print is produced to order on premium 189 gsm museum-grade archival matte paper with fade-resistant pigment inks, for rich, gallery-quality colour and crisp detail. This is a faithful reproduction of the original lithograph, colour-matched and printed to archival standards rather than a flat mass-market copy.
