A charming and rare piece of early film history, this is a vintage French cinema poster for Charlie Chaplin in 'Garçon de Café' (Waiter), designed by the artist Jean Auvigne and released in France by the Himalaya Film Co. Chaplin, unmistakable with his tousled hair and little moustache, is caught mid-wobble as a hopelessly overwhelmed café waiter - apron on, one arm balancing a tray with a single bottle of wine, his oversized shoes splayed beneath him. It is comedy frozen at its funniest moment.

The poster dates from the era when Chaplin's short comedies were sweeping the world and being re-titled for every country that showed them - here given the irresistibly simple French name 'Garçon de Café.' By the late 1910s Chaplin's Tramp was arguably the most recognisable figure on earth, and local distributors like Himalaya Film commissioned their own hand-drawn posters to pull crowds into the cinema. Those French one-sheets, with their bold flat colour and playful Art Nouveau lettering, have become prized collector's items in their own right.

What makes this design so appealing is its economy and wit: a limited palette of orange, green and cream, a single perfectly observed pose, and the big black 'CHARLIE CHAPLIN' and lime-green 'GARÇON DE CAFÉ' lettering doing all the rest. It is a poster that makes you smile before you have read a word - exactly what a Chaplin comedy was meant to do.

As wall art it is a delight. The graphic colours and comic energy make it perfect for a kitchen, café or coffee corner, a home cinema or media room, a bar area, or a gallery wall of vintage film posters. It is a wonderful gift for Chaplin devotees, silent-film and classic-cinema buffs, café owners and anyone who loves vintage movie art, and it pairs beautifully with other early cinema and Belle Époque prints.

Because the original dates to the early twentieth century, it is now in the public domain, which is why we can reproduce it at full museum quality.

Each print is produced on premium 189 gsm museum-grade archival matte paper, faithfully capturing the bright flat colours, crisp lettering and warm vintage paper of the original poster - ready to frame and enjoy for years to come.
