Leonetto Cappiello Menthe-Pastille

Leonetto Cappiello's "Menthe-Pastille" — France, 1906.

La Menthe Pastille emerged from a happy accident. In 1885, the Angers pharmacist Emile Giffard created what he believed to be an English cough lozenge, only to discover he had invented something far more delightful—a refreshing digestif with an intoxicating appeal. The liqueur proved so successful that Giffard transformed his pharmacy into a full distillery, an operation the Giffard family continues to oversee to this day. Cappiello's poster celebrates the drink's enchanting power with characteristic flair: he animates a garden statue, bringing it to life in an expression of pure indulgence. T
