A jewel of scientific art, this plate of sea anemones (Actiniae) comes from Ernst Haeckel's legendary 'Kunstformen der Natur' (Art Forms in Nature), published between 1899 and 1904. Against a soft ground, a symmetrical arrangement of anemones blooms in glowing colour, their tentacled discs and columnar bodies rendered with a precision and grace that turns these humble sea creatures into something like living flowers of the deep. It is nature revealed as pure, radiant ornament.
Ernst Haeckel (1834-1919) was a German biologist, naturalist and artist whose gorgeously illustrated books did more than almost any others to reveal the hidden beauty of the natural world. A passionate follower of Darwin, he drew tirelessly, and his 'Kunstformen der Natur' - a hundred meticulous, exquisitely composed plates ranging from jellyfish and anemones to orchids and hummingbirds - had an enormous influence on Art Nouveau design, architecture and the decorative arts. His genius lay in arrangement: he grouped his specimens with a rhythm and symmetry that transformed scientific study into stunning decoration.
Sea anemones were a favourite subject, and it is easy to see why. Their soft, radiating forms and jewel-like colours lend themselves perfectly to Haeckel's decorative eye, producing a plate that is at once biologically fascinating and simply beautiful.
As wall art it is effortlessly elegant. The luminous colour and graceful forms make it a natural for a bathroom, bedroom, living room or a coastal- or ocean-themed space, and it suits Art Nouveau, botanical, cottagecore and eclectic interiors alike. It is a wonderful gift for ocean and marine-life lovers, divers, scientists and anyone drawn to vintage biology art, and it looks especially beautiful grouped with other Haeckel plates in a gallery wall.
Because the original was published around 1900 and Haeckel's work is now in the public domain, we are able to reproduce it at full museum quality.
Each print is produced on premium 189 gsm museum-grade archival matte paper, faithfully capturing the fine detail, glowing colour and soft antique paper of the original plate - ready to frame and enjoy for years to come.
