A charming and beautifully detailed botanical plate, this print of flowering pincushion cacti comes from 'The Cactaceae' - the landmark four-volume study of the cactus family published between 1919 and 1923 by Nathaniel Britton and Joseph Rose. Six plump little Mammillaria cacti dot the page, each crowned with a ring of delicate pink and red blossoms, rendered with scientific accuracy and real affection against a soft, warm ground. It is desert botany at its most endearing.

'The Cactaceae' was the most ambitious cactus book ever produced, a monumental survey sponsored by the Carnegie Institution of Washington that catalogued the entire family in unprecedented detail. Its exquisite colour plates were painted by Mary Emily Eaton, the gifted botanical artist of the New York Botanical Garden, whose delicate, lifelike illustrations remain some of the most beloved cactus images ever made. This plate, with its cluster of round, spiny, flower-topped Mammillarias, shows off exactly why.

Part of the appeal is that mix of the scientific and the utterly cute: the fat little cacti, the bright crowns of bloom, the careful spines all arranged with a naturalist's precision and an artist's warmth. It reads as fresh and stylish today as any modern plant print.

As wall art it is a delight. The green-and-pink palette and desert charm make it a natural for a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom or plant-filled room, a sunroom or a gallery wall, and it slots perfectly into Southwestern, desert-boho, cottagecore and modern interiors. It is a wonderful gift for cactus and succulent lovers, plant parents, gardeners and anyone drawn to botanical or desert decor, and it pairs beautifully with other cactus and botanical prints.

Because the original was published around 1920, it is now in the public domain, which is why we can reproduce it at full museum quality.

Each print is produced on premium 189 gsm museum-grade archival matte paper, faithfully capturing the soft greens, pink blooms and warm antique paper of the original plate - ready to frame and enjoy for years to come.
