A striking botanical study of the majestic columnar cactus, this print comes from 'The Cactaceae' - the landmark four-volume survey of the cactus family published between 1919 and 1923 by Nathaniel Britton and Joseph Rose. A tall, ribbed Cereus stem rises across the page, crowned by its spectacular large, pale, night-blooming flowers - the famous blossoms that open for a single night and fill the desert air with scent - all rendered with exquisite accuracy and grace against a warm, soft ground.

'The Cactaceae' was the most ambitious cactus book ever created, a monumental study sponsored by the Carnegie Institution of Washington that catalogued the entire family in unprecedented detail. Its ravishing colour plates were painted by Mary Emily Eaton, the talented botanical artist of the New York Botanical Garden, whose lifelike illustrations remain among the most treasured cactus images ever produced. This plate captures the drama of the great Cereus in full, glorious bloom.

What makes it so appealing is the contrast between the tough, spiny, architectural stem and the sudden, delicate extravagance of the flower - a reminder of the surprising beauty hidden in the harshest landscapes. It is bold, elegant and effortlessly stylish.

As wall art it is a handsome statement. The green stems and creamy blooms make it a natural for a living room, bedroom, kitchen or plant-filled space, a sunroom or a gallery wall, and it slots perfectly into Southwestern, desert-boho, modern and cottagecore interiors. It is a wonderful gift for cactus and succulent lovers, plant parents, gardeners and anyone drawn to botanical or desert decor, and it pairs beautifully with other cactus and botanical prints.

Because the original was published around 1920, it is now in the public domain, which is why we can reproduce it at full museum quality.

Each print is produced on premium 189 gsm museum-grade archival matte paper, faithfully capturing the soft greens, creamy blossoms and warm antique paper of the original plate - ready to frame and enjoy for years to come.
