A radiant burst of colour from the hand of the greatest flower painter who ever lived, this is 'Lychnis grandiflora' (the large-flowered lychnis, or 'Lychnide à grandes fleurs') by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, the botanical artist celebrated as 'the Raphael of flowers.' A cluster of vivid orange, fringed blooms crowns a slender green stem, each ragged-edged petal rendered with a delicacy and warmth that make the flowers seem to glow against the soft antique paper.

Redouté (1759-1840) was the official flower painter to the French court, working for both Marie-Antoinette and the Empress Joséphine, whose famous gardens at Malmaison he immortalised. He perfected a refined stipple-engraving technique that could capture the subtlest gradations of petal and colour, and his plates - especially his roses and his 'Choix des plus belles fleurs' - remain the most admired botanical images ever made. This lychnis shows exactly why: it is scientifically true, yet full of life, movement and joyful colour.

The flower's fiery orange and fringed, almost carnation-like petals make it one of the most cheerful of all Redouté's subjects - a warm, glowing spot of colour that lifts any wall it hangs on.

As wall art it is a delight. The vivid orange against warm paper makes it a natural for a bedroom, living room, kitchen or dressing room, and it slots beautifully into cottagecore, farmhouse, shabby-chic and eclectic interiors. It looks especially lovely grouped with other Redouté florals in a gallery wall, and it makes a wonderful gift for gardeners, flower lovers and anyone drawn to romantic vintage botanical decor.

Because the original dates to the early nineteenth century, it is firmly in the public domain, which is why we can reproduce it at full museum quality.

Each print is produced on premium 189 gsm museum-grade archival matte paper, faithfully capturing the glowing orange, fine stipple detail and soft antique paper of the original - ready to frame and enjoy for years to come.
